:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Sue Sundram -- please do not buy THIS Publishers book. waste of money. : On shortness of life is a great book by SENECA. But thi8s edition is cheaply produced. It has numbers for cross referencing and explanation. But when you turn over to the glossary for referencing.....THERE IS NOT GLOSSARY. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2019 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Questionable translation : I did not like this "new" translation. I really doubt that Seneca used the terms "macho" and "reboot" (among others.) Perhaps this translator was trying to update Seneca's ideas for modern sensibilities. But Seneca's writings have been around for 2,000 years, and I would have preferred a translation honoring that ancient wisdom which still matters today, rather than the translator's off-putting attempts at being clever and trendy. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kyle Lawrence Sherrer -- One of the best books I have ever read hands down. : A fantastic book that points out how important time management is in the world we live in. This book is a classic that should be in every school and be mandatory reading before high school. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2016 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Robert Martin -- Footnotes are missing; sloppy production : This arrived yesterday. The translator was born in 1870, so this is an older translation, which is fine, but the footnotes numbers are in the text, but the footnotes are missing. No publisher is indicated. Sorry I bought this cheaply made edition. Whoever put this out has taken little care and no responsibility for the book. Buy a better, more reputable edition. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Indy -- Buy 3 minimum and give them to young people you care about. : I gave this to my 23 year old and he was so moved by it he bought several more and gave them to his friends. This is a MUST READ. Read it in one day. Worth every minute. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from B Nelson -- Wisdom and vision. : I’m happy to see another release in the Stoics series. This volume, On The Shortness Of Life: De Brevitate Vitae (A New Translation with Image Gallery and Seneca Biography) (Stoics In Their Own Words Book 4), is another powerful work. Seneca’s writing is full of wisdom and vision. I read these ancient words and am inspired. It is absolutely incredible that these essays were not lost to time and they are now able to be easily discovered by so many new readers. A gift of great knowledge. Everyone should read this stuff. Five stars. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2015 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Enfieldchpl -- Good Introduction to Stoic Philosophy. : I read this short book after using many of Seneca's quotes in writing & public addresses. His writing sounds familiar- he reminds me of Bill O'Reilly's observations. Rest & humility are a good start but not what I would consider the summation of a good life. My perspective has been improved by reading this excellent translation. - Enfieldchpl ( Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2017 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from LW -- Where are the Footnotes/Endnotes? : I had a book printed by Amazon before. Last time the page nos. were missing. This time the Footnotes/Endnotes are missing. Shame. I can manage without page nos., but I would like to have been able to read the notes to this nice little booklet. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 20, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Leon -- Life is short, or is it? : Straight to the point with no excess B.S. Books of this nature nowadays are filled with pseudo-science and jargon, I assume it's due to pressure from publishers to add more pages to the book so people feel like they are getting there monies worth. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Llie if long if you know how lo live it. : A lot of wisdom cam be found in that small book as one could expect! The challenge is now about executing, knowing is only half of the battle. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 3, 2017 )
